Serial music of the mid-century, now almost fifty years behind us and very much out of fashion, is a recent scholarly interest of mine. In addition to the well known composers who wrote music in that genre, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, and others of the Darmstadt School (after the summer courses in contemporary avant-garde music held in Darmstadt, Germany), lesser known composers, such as the Greek student of Arnold Schoenberg, Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949), also wrote serial (12-note) music, as did the American composer Ben Weber (1916).
I would be interested to know of ongoing or completed research on the serial music of these figures. Should I receive significant information on this topic, which I believe to be important in the history of 20th-century avant-garde concert music, I will add it to this page of my website.
I have written an article for the March 2002 issue of Music Analysis entitled Messiaen as Serialist. |
